HPK VO Rule No. 11: The commercial is king.

So, why do you want to get into voiceover?

What made you want to pursue it? What caught your attention?

7 out of 10 people probably answer “games” or “animation”. Some might say “radio” or “broadcast” of some kind.

I’ve never heard anyone say that as a young child they had a burning desire to read promos for Discovery Channel or black box warnings for the latest Pfizer pharmaceutical.

Ironic isn’t it, that perhaps the most “invisible” kind of voiceover work - (promos and commercials) have the biggest payout for the voiceover actor?Especially union commercial work.

For that reason, if you are seeking representation - any agent will want to hear you read a commercial before any other kind of voiceover work. Any other at all.

The commercial is king.
